My nephew (Marc Erickson) is running for Fort Atkinson in the D1 4X800 which is up in 30 minutes. He's looking to beat Andrew's split time from last year in a friendly inter family rivalry.

The girl's 4X400 took 4th in their prelim heat ( the fast one) , which is generally enough to move on. Unfortunately the slow heat was surprisingly fast and Shorewood was edged out by 1.4 seconds.

So very very close ...

Next year ladies.

Big Ben

Ben takes 3rd in the two mile!

It was a huge race.

He did exactly what he had to to win and was in contention right up to the last turn. Brilliant and fun to watch.

Ben sat in second behind Luterbach for the first mile. He took the lead to start the second half and led laps 5 and 7 before getting out kicked by keene and luterbach in the final 300 meters. Luterbach had an insane kick left and won easily. Ben ran a very even race and looked strong the whole way, just let the other two talk him out of it at the end ( don't ever look back Ben). Won't happen again next year I'm sure.

Awesome race. Congratulations Ben!

UPDATE:

I suppose times would help.

Ben ran: 9:42.2 almost 10 seconds better than his seed time coming in but 5 or 6 seconds shy of his PR.
Luterbach won in 9:35 and Keene was 9:39.

More Emily

Emily took 7th in the 800 running 2:21.

The mile obviously took a bit out of her legs as she looked flat at the start. Unfortunately this left her stuck behind a bunched crowd that she just couldn't work around and as a result she was never really in the race.

Next up for Emily will be the mile relay which will cap a huge day for her. Very few coaches let a runner attempt three races on friday at State because of the lack of recovery time and the speed of the competition.

Ben will toe the line in the 2 mile in about 20 minutes.

Go Ben.

I had no idea that there was such a thing as .tv but I am watching it now and it is very cool.

Okay, this isn't a live blog or anything and I am not at the meet, but I have been chatting with Dom and I will try to post what I hear during the day for those of you who couldn't make it but want to know. Also apparently PT timing is streaming some live video and real time results. If I can find the link I will post it

FIRST UPDATE:

Emily B ran a 5 or 6 second PR in the mile this morning; she crossed the tape in 5:08. That was good enough for 8th place. The winning time was 5:01 so you can imagine how crowded it was up front. Congrats Emily! She is now resting in the shade somewhere in anticipation of running the 800 meters in about 30 minutes from now.

Ben has another hour yet before the 2 mile. Strategically scheduled to be run in the hotest part of the day.

State Meet is this weekend

Thinking of a last minute dash to lacrosse to see the races? Especially because Friday could be the last nice day of the summer.

On Friday division 2/3 events run from 9:30 to 1:00. For us that would include the girls mile at about 10:00; the girl's 800 at aboout 11:00; the boys two mile at about 12:00 and the girl's mile relay at about 12:30.

If you want to hang around friday night and watch division one ( and you should) you will need to buy a week-end all session pass.

Hotels can be a problem if you don't already have one, but goose island state park is 5 minutes up the road and you can pitch a tent for about $20. It's a very nice place, and most of your fellow campers will be students in town to watch the meet.

Saturday morning you can sleep in because the running events don't start until 1:00. All three divisions are together so things run a little slower. First event of interest would be the boy's mile at about 2:00 ( I'm just guessing on times, please do your own calculations). followed by... nothing, I think, that involves Shorewood. Someone correct me if I am missing someone.

This is a great event. The weather should be nice. Bring sunscreen and dark glasses.

Quick notables:
Peter Drews was Conference Champion in mile, beating out Bobby Laabs with a PR of 4:22.69. This places Peter with the second fastest time in D2 State. I believe that John Taylor had a PR in the mile at around 4:43.32. John placed 4th.

Emily Bachhuber had a very competitive one mile run against Hannah Frett, the Peawaukee girl. Emily held her position all the way but for final 200 when Hannah out kicked her. Had a huge PR I believe at somewhere around 4:15. Emily went on to winning the 800 in a very close match up with Kristin Lillie from Brown Deer...beat her by an eye lash right at the finish.

Peter Drews placed 5th in the 800 with a time of 2:05.84.

Ben Tyler finished 2nd in the 3200 with a time of 9:55. Bobby Laabs took command of the race at about the 1.5 mile mark. Bobby ran a triple event at conference...winning the 800 and the
3200 and finishing second in the 800!

Cameron Hood had a suberb day, placing 2nd in Conference in the High Jump at 6'-01".

Details for Conference Meet:

GREENDALE TRACK AND FIELD
Greendale High School will be hosting the Woodland Conference Track Meet on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, with a rain date of May 20th.

Each team will be permitted 28 individual entries plus relays. No more than 3 athletes may be entered per event, and athletes are limited to 4 events per WIAA regulations.

Scoring will be to 8 places (10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1). Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners.

Admission will be $3 for adults and $1 for students.

Event information:
High jump – 2 pits - girls on north pit, boys on south pit. Opening heights to be determined after entries are submitted following WIAA regional procedures. Bar will be raised 2” until 3 jumpers are left, then 1”. Jumpers must take all 3 jumps for the first two heights, 2 jumps for remaining heights.
Pole vault – girls first. Opening heights to be determined after entries are submitted following WIAA regional procedures. The bar will be raised 6” until 3 vaulters remain, then 3” thereafter. Vaulters must take 2nd attempts immediately.
Long Jump and Triple Jump – girls triple jump and boys long jump will be first. Nine jumpers will qualify for finals. Jumpers will take 3 prelim jumps. Finalists will be given three additional jumps. Pit times will be based on the number of entries.
Shot and Discus – girls shot put and boys discus will be first. Nine throwers will qualify for finals. There will be 2 seeded flights, with a twenty minute warm up between flights. Throwers will take 3 prelim throws. Finalists will receive 3 additional throws, throwing in reverse order for the finals.
Running events: 8 will qualify from prelims to finals; heat winners and best times.

Solid Performance at Conference Relays

Sorry....have few individual results but this is what I heard about:

Long Distance Medlay
Came in first....started off with Jordan at 800 leg...had a very strong finish giving Malachi the lead for the 400....Peter maintained and gained the lead on the 1200 leg and Ben finished it off with a solid mile time. I believe that Peter had a PR in the 1200 leg at somewhere around 2:18(?).

4x1 Mile
Came in first....sounds like John Taylor blew away the Whitnall guy...heard he was behind him at the baton but caught and broke him. Taylor was around 4:47-48; Joe Pendleton had a solid PR at 4:50ish, Bredan PR'd breaking 5 minutes at 4:58 and Gavin I belive was around 5:07-5:10 and had a PR.

4x800
Came in first....an exciting race like the 4x1 mile; Jordan led off with something like a 2:07 I believe...which put us at the top in a very close leg fighting for first between three teams (if I recall)...Oliver had a solid run at about 2:11 (?) but slipped into third place at the pass of the baton to Tyler; Tyler cranked it up on his last lap, passing and holding the lead into the baton exchange ending with a PR of about 2:03.5-7; Peter also had a great race holding off a very fast competitor to the very end to win the race for Shorewood with a time of about 2:03.5-7.

4x400
Came in fifth I believe...made up of a couple of distance runners.

Woodland Conference Relays Today and Tuesday!

The Woodlands Conference Relays will be held this Monday and Tuesday. The throws will be held on Monday due to the construction being done at Greenfield HS. Coach Kopplin will drive the throwers to Greendale at 2:15. The meet line up will change slightly, be prepared as I have recieved several phone calls about athletes being sick this weekend. We will have to play it by ear. Bus leaves at 1:00 on Tuesday!! Nobody may travel on the bus unless you are competing!!

Message from Carolyn Tyler:
I know you want some info about Dom and Keysha’s baby. Baby Birk was born yesterday at 4:38 p.m. He weighs 6 lbs. 10 oz. and is 19.5 inches long. Both mother and baby are doing fine. Dom will send pictures on the internet soon.

The pasta dinner is still set for Monday evening, April 27th at 5:30. Susan Taylor, Tom Bachuber, Moya Mowbray and Jill Eder will be helping. Susan Taylor, Sue Kelly, Mike Mazur and I will bring desserts and Gretchen Miller and Tom B. will bring fruit salad.

Highlights of Woodland Indoor Varsity Conference Meet
Could not be at beginning of meet, or track everything, but here are a few highlights for the record:

Boys 4x800 Relay
My understanding is that most of the boys had a tough run; Brendan Vorpahl was at about 2:15, John Taylor (recovering from food poisoning), Gavin Schroeder and Keith Dodd were in the 2:20s.

Charles Miller Leads the Way for Shorewood in Boys 55 Meter Dash; Kristen Obiakor Makes it to Finals and Places 8th.
Charles Miller was our top 55 Meter Dash sprinter coming in 11th with a time of 6.95, followed by Joey Knutson at 7.19 and Matthew Wasinginton at 7.41. Kristen Obiakor was the girls standout with a preliminary of 8.08 and a final time of 8.10 placing 8th overall in conference. Annie Kpcak came in at 8.53.

Kushner Leads Way for Boys 55 Hurdles; Walker Does It for the Girls
Mike Kushner placed 17th overall with a time of 10.39 while Markesha Walker places 13th overall for the girls with a time of 11.02, followed by Molly Hopkins in 18th with a time of 12.97.

Baker and Vrobel Finish Strong in Girls 1600 Meter Race
Morgan Baker and Jenny Vrobel ran for Shorewood....both starting in the back of the pack and running close together. Both began moving through the pack and finishing a solid 9th and 10th overall; I believe both had PRs. Morgan broke 6 minutes, coming in with a strong finish at 5:53.73 and Jenny was directly behind her with a time of 6:02.02.

Drews and Tyler take 2nd and 3rd in Boys 1600 Meter Race
Expected to be a major shootout between a couple of conference rivals, Bobby Laabs, Peter Drews and Ben Tyler put their toes to the line while Alec Haouglin sat it out to run the 3200. Laabs set the pace during the first half of the race with Drews and Tyler following. Just past the halfway point there was a jockeying for first and Laabs decided to make his move, surging into a solid first place. Drews hung shortly behind him as Tyler drifted away. Drews had a strong kick at the end but not strong enough to overtake Laabs, coming in at about 4:31, Drews directly behind him a 4:32.85, followed by Tyler at 4:38.22.

Miller, Krishoc and Knutson Competes in 200 Meter; Obiakor and Kipcak do it for the Girls
Charles Miller came in first in his heat, placing tops for Shorewood at 9th overall with a time of 24.39, followed by Malachi Krishoc, placing 13th at 24.78 and Joe Knutson at 25.54 for 18th. Kristen Obiakor placed 11th overall for the girls with a time of 30.26, followed by Annie Kipcak at 20th with a time of 32.06.

Krushner Places 15th in 200 Meter Hurdles for Boys; Walker Places 16th in 200 Meter Hurdles for Girls
Mike Krushner came in with a time of 29.55 in the 200 Meter Hurdles for the Boys, placing 15th, while Markesha Walker finished the meet with a time of 36.56 in the Girls 200 Meter Hurdles, followed by Molly Hopkins at 23rd with a time of 40.34.

Jordan Washington Has Solid Performance in 400 Meter Dash, Placing 7th Overall
Washington had a solid time of 54.93 in the 400 Meter Dash to have him score points for S.horewood with a 7th place finish. Other runners included Oliver Heywood and Justin Carter placing 3 and 4th in their heat and finishing 14th and 15th with times of 58.34 and 58.51 respectively. Oliver beat Justin by a breath as Justin seemed to be struggling with a potential hamstring injury.

Cara and Emily Jacobsen Have Impressive 2nd and 4th Places Finishes in 400 Meter Dash
Sisters Cara and Emily were the highlight reel for the girls in the 400 Meter Dash, finishing and scoring 2nd and 4th in Conference with times of 1:03.66 and 1:04.36. Bridgeitte Sellinger won her heat and placed 10th overall with at time of 1:08.08.

Drews Places 5th in 800 Meter, followed by Vorphal and Dodd; Waters Wins Her Heat in the Girls, With a Strong Finish, Places 7th Overall, Followed by Schroeder and Lubka.
Peter Drews had a tough battle in the 800 Meter race, starting way behind the pack and having to work his was into competition. The effort paid off but he did not have his typical kick to compete for top honors, coming in 5th with a solid time of 2:07.42; Brendan Vorphal and Keith Dodd followed, placing 10th and 14th with times of 2:15.20 and 2:17.82 respectively.

Nora Waters had an impressive run with a very strong kick in the last lap to solidly win her heat and placing 7th overall for the girls with at time of 2:38.75, a PR, I believe. Laura Schroeder placed second in the same heat and placed 9th overall with a time of 2:41.75, followed by Elana Lubka who placed 4th in the same heat and 14th overall with a time of 2:46.83.

Tyler Takes 3200 With a Solid Performance; Pendleton PRs and Places 3rd
Ben Tyler took command immediately in the 3200 Meter race, making sure state contender Alek Houglin will have to fight for the position from the very beginning. Houglin stayed on his tail for a third of the way through the race when he started drifting away. Tyler went out fast at about 4:46 in the first mile and finished the race at about 9:46.06 for a PR. Pendleton had a strong finish, placing 3rd overall with a significant PR of 10:34.01. Gavin Schroeder rounded the Shorewood boys off with at 15th place finish at 11:34.

Bachhuber Left No Doubts in Girls 3200
Emily Bachhuber had her debut 3200 and set the pace at the very beginning and let no one challenge her during the entire race. The lead pack stayed with her most of the way but her kick in the last lap settled the score. Her final time was 12:07.48.

Relay Highlights
Not sure of any of the results but heard that we had a very strong 4x200 relay team but for a poor handoff. We were in 2nd place going into the last leg but lost a ton of ground at handoff.

Highlights from the Field Events
Sorry for poor reporting on field events. James Newton was most impressive for the Boys, placing 7th overall in the Boy's Triple Jump with a distance of 38'03.50" and 9th overall in the Boy's Long Jump with a distance of 19'07.50". Mario Giacobassi placed 11th overall in the Boy's Shot Put with a throw of 23'08.00". Will try to do better in the future!

WOODLAND CONFERENCE INDOOR TRACK MEET AT CARTHAGE COLLEGE
TARBLE RECREATION AND ATHLETICS CENTER (TARC)

FRIDAY, APRIL 3, 2009

TRACK: The track is a 200 meter 6 lane un-banked Martin Surface (encapsulated versaturf). 1/8” exposed Pyramid Spikes only!!! Please do not abuse this rule. If they spikes make a ‘clicking’ sound while running, they’re too long. Spikes are not allowed on the basketball courts in the track infield. Be sure to tell your athletes to stay off of those areas with spikes.

SCORING/TIMING: We will be using the Finish Lynx Fully Automatic Timing System and will be scoring the meet using Hy-Tek Meet Manager. Results will be made available at the conclusion of the meet. Coaches, please remind your athletes and assistant coaches to STAY CLEAR OF THE FINISH AREA. Failure to do so may result in the camera not catching the finish of a race.

ADVANCEMENT: In running events with trials, the heat winners and the next fastest times to eight (8) total individuals will qualify for finals. The finals will be run as one (1) heat of eight (8). All other races will be run as finals with the fastest section running last.

LONG JUMP: Located on the inside of the track. Distance from takeoff board to pit is 8 feet. Approach is approximately 130 ft. 1/8” exposed Pyramid Spikes only! “Open pit” for one (1) hour. Three jumps to each competitor. Nine (9) jumpers and ties will qualify for the finals where three (3) additional jumps can then be taken in reverse order. All best efforts from the trials will carry over in the finals.

TRIPLE JUMP: Located on the inside of the track. Takeoff board is 28, 32 and 36 feet. We will be adding a 24 foot takeoff board as well. Approach is approximately 130 ft. 1/8” exposed Pyramid Spikes only! “Open pit” for one (1) hour. Three jumps to each competitor. Nine (9) jumpers and ties will qualify for the finals where three (3) additional jumps can then be taken in reverse order. All best efforts from the trials will carry over in the finals.

HIGH JUMP: Located on the inside of the track. The high jump apron is the same surface as the track. 1/8” exposed Pyramid Spikes only, unless your jumper has a ‘long’ approach, which will begin on a synthetic surface where no spikes are allowed. Opening heights will be determined at the scratch meeting. 2” increments until there are 3 jumpers left and 1” increments thereafter. Second attempt at a height must be taken immediately after a miss.

POLE VAULT: Opening height to be determined prior to meet. Please have UP TO DATE verification forms. Bar will increase by 6” increments until 3 vaulters are left and 3” increments thereafter. Second attempts at a height must be taken immediately after a miss.

SHOT PUT: Located on the inside of the track. Throwing circle is wood. Athletes will be arranged in 2 flights. There will be three (3) puts allowed. Top (9) finishers will advance to finals and will be allowed an additional three (3) puts.

SPECTATORS: Admission for spectators is $3 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens. BLEACHER AREAS in the field house are for SPECTATORS ONLY and not for athletes or coaches.

CONCESSIONS: A concession stand will be available on the second floor. The stand is located in the lobby area.

T-SHIRTS: Woodland Conference Indoor Track Meet short sleeve T-shirts will be on sale for $12 the day of the meet.

DIRECTIONS: From southbound I-94: Exit at Highway E, the first Kenosha exit. Follow east for approximately eight miles, or until the road ends at Sheridan Road (Wisconsin Highway 32) and turn right (south). Carthage College is on this road, approximately one mile south of Highway E. Turn left at the driveway past the flagpole and over the bridge to reach the Carthage Physical Education Center.

Note from Coach Dom:
This meet ended up becoming an Exhibition meet. There was some mix up in meet entries, so the meet manager decided to cancel the scoring and to just run it as an exhibition. This is unfortunate as I really believe that we had a chance in winning our first meet in many years. We had some excellent performances! Keep up the great work. We have the Varsity Conference meet and the JV Conference meet coming up. I hope to get our Vaulter’s up and off the ground by the next meet.

Whitefish Bay Invitational on Tuesday!

Note from Dom:

The meet will be held at Whitefish Bay High School on Tuesday, March 21st at 4:15.
Teams competing: Whitefish Bay, Shorewood, Port Washington and Oconomowoc.

The field events are set to start at 4:30. Running events will follow.

We are only allowed to have 3 Varsity athletes per event and one relay team. You can be a Varsity athlete in one event and an exhibition athlete in another event! Coaches/Athletes will get your times in all exhibition events. We will need help timing with the large number of exhibition athletes. Please assign a friend who may not be running at that time to help time you as the officials will only record the Varsity athletes. Please be prepared to be asked to compete in a relay event. We can make changes at the meet, so nothing is set in "stone" until after the coaches meeting.

Absolutely no spikes can be worn on the track!!!!

Bus will leave at 3:30. So do not try to get out of your 7th hour class!

Greyhounds Show Promise at UW-Whitewater

The young and greatly expanded Shorewood Track & Field boys team showed great promise at the first meet of the season held at UW-Whitewater. According to Coach Dom, the team size has virtually doubled, from 25 last year, to approximately 50 dedicated boys this year. Friday's results may be a good leading indicator of what the team can do as this young team improves throughout the season.

While I was unable to get to the meet until halfway through...and could not keep track of everyone, here are some of the highlights as I saw them:

Boys 4x800 Relay Places Third With Solid Performance
The 4x800 relay team, manned by Tyler, Mazur, Taylor and Vorpahl had a good showing by placing third overall with a time of 8:52.56. Tyler set the tone with a 2:08, followed by Mazur at about 2:15 while Vorpahl and Taylor wrapped the effort up both at about 2:14. All four runners had PRs. While early in the season, this is the top conference time by a long shot. Their performance compares to a 9:04 last year.

Nate Booth Hurdles to a Strong Finish in 55 Hurdles
With a PR of 10.65, Booth placed 27th overall in a competitive field. His time ranks him as a contender in the Woodland Conference.

Miller, Knutson and Washington Compete in 55 Meter Dash
Shorewood was well represented in the 55 Meter Dash with all competitors generating PRs. Miller placed 18th with a time of 7.12, Knutson was right behind him at 7.15, followed by Washington at 7.45.

Morgan Baker Places 8th in Girls 1600 Meter Run
Seeded in the first heat, Baker absolutely dominated to field and had no competition through the 8 lap event. Her time of 6:07 should have placed her in the final heat, but regardless she had a great run with a solid finish. I believe this must be a PR.

Emily Bachhuber was scheduled to compete but was scratched due to illness.

Down to the Wire in the 1600 for Pre-ter Drews...Beaten Out by an Elbow; Pendleton Has Strong Showing Placing 14th
This had to be the most exciting finish of the meet....with Drews, in typical fashion, pouring it on during the final lap, getting edged out of first place by an elbow. Drews began the race in ordinary fashion, running in the middle of the pack, somewhere around 8th, during the first half of the race. He began to surge forward in the final quarter, quickly moving up to third place. With just one lap to go, Peter moved into second place and still had a good 30 meter gap to close to catch the leader with a half-lap to go. His kick "kicked in" but could not get around Rehfeldt in the final 5 meters and came in second, .21 seconds behind the champion. Drews had a solid PR and is ranked top in conference and highly ranked in D2 state with this time.

Pendleton was in the second fastest heat and ran an impressive race. He kept a good pace but for laps 4 and 5 when he decided to take a break, spiking above a 40 second pace. He made up for it with a strong finish, passing a runner and placing 2nd in his heat with a time of 5:02.

Boys 4x200 Had Solid Time But DQd for Tough Handoff
The team made up of Matt Washington, Jordan Washington, Charles Miller and Joey Knutson had a strong showing and would have placed relatively high with a time of around 1:43.6 but for a DQ due to a poor handoff. This foursome shows good promise for the future as they get their act together on the exchanges.

Shorewood Boys Fair Well in the 400 Meters...With Jordan Having a Great Race
Jordan Washington got his 400 Meter season off to a strong start with a time of 55.1, placing him fourth overall for a medal. Oliver Heywood proved he has some talent as a sprinter as well coming in with a time of 58.2.

Dodd Finishes Strong in 800; Schroeder Gives All in First 400 of 800 Meter Race
Freshman Keith Dodd's first time effort in the 800 was an impressive 2:18, placing him 18th overall in the meet. Keith ran alone for most of the race as the runners were stretched out around the track. Not knowing how much he had in him, Keith closed the gap considerably during the final lap. This time places him as the top runner in this event for the Woodland Conference. While early in the season, Dodd's performance as a Freshman is encouraging.

Determined to make his mark, Gavin positioned himself as the top guy to beat in his heat of the 800 Meter race, setting the pace considerably fastest than the pack. Going out at 1:05 for the first 400 and well in the lead, Gavin "hit the wall" and could not hold his lead, finishing fourth with a respectable time of 2:22.04. I believe this is a PR for Gavin and am sure he learned a lot about pace in the 800 which will serve him well in the future.

Big Aces Duke It Out in 3200; Tyler Finishes Third
This event was everything it was promoted to be as three of the top distance runners went head to head in the first meet of the season. Spencer Agnew was the runner to beat and he quickly set the pace with Lauderbach and Tyler falling in step for step right behind; the remaining runners quickly lagged the leading trio. The three were still together stride for stride at the 1 mile mark at a pace of about 4:47-8. Shortly thereafter the trio began to lap the other runners and some jockeying around for first happened as they passed. At about lap 10 Agnew decided to make a statement and broke out with Lauderbach holding on and Tyler slipping back. By the 14th lap it was clear that the race was either Agnew's or Lauderbach's depending on who had the stronger kick. As it turns out, Agnew had the stronger kick and won the race by 1.5 seconds, at 9:30.62; Lauderbach was second with a very impressive PR of 9:32.28 and Tyler finished third with a strong PR of 9:47.52. All three set a meet record.

4x400 Places 17th to Wrap Up the Meet at About 10:00 pm
The foursome of J. Washington, Oliver Heywood, Peter Drews and Mario Giacovassi closed the house with a 4x400 time of 3:55.20. Jordon led off at about 55.0, followed by Oliver at about 61, Drews and Mario both at about 58.

Great News! Shorewood to Host Track Meet!

Shorewood Greyhounds will be hosting their first Home meet on the new track on April 28th! It will be co-hosted with Milwaukee Pulaski and there will be up to five teams participating! This is fantastic news and, in part, came about due to the strong demand for such a venue by the parents....which means it's our turn to make sure we pitch in to help!

Conference meet today

The varsity Conference meet is today Tuesday the 13th.

It is at 'Tosa West. That is the track you can see from 45 just after you pass Mayfair. The address is:

JV conference will be on Thursday.

This is basically the end of the season, so come on out if you can.

Next up is regionals, then sectionals, then State. We should be able to send 4 or 5 runners to State, but for everyone else this is it.

*** on a personal note I apologize for letting this site go this season. I've had too much on my plate recently and something had to go ... If anyone is interested in learning how to do this and helping out in the future that would be great. A back up would have covered the holes this year.

Indoor Conference

The varsity indoor conference meet is indeed tomorrow

The meet will be held at Carthage college. This is a gorgeous facility. Honestly one of the nicest indoor tracks in the country. In particular, some genius architect built the track above the swimming pool, so the humidity is ideal for running ( as opposed to most indoor tracks where the air is so dry that everyone leaves complaining about sore throats and scorched lungs).

The bus will be pulling out of the parking lot at 7:00 am. They will not wait for any stragglers or serial snooze alarm offenders. Dom also assures me that there is room on the bus for spectators and fans so there is no excuse to miss this event.

The field events start at 9:00 and the running events begin at 10:00.

Plan on spending the day as these meets never finish early.

Carthage is pretty easy to find. The official directions read as follows:

From southbound I-94: Exit at Highway E, the first Kenosha exit. Follow east for approximately eight miles, or until the road ends at Sheridan Road (Wisconsin Highway 32) and turn right (south). Carthage College is on this road, approximately one mile south of Highway E. Turn left at the driveway past the flagpole and over the bridge to reach the Carthage Physical Education Center.

The building itself is rather unique in that it is "stacked" against the side of a hill. The track is all the way at the top ( about 4 levels up). There are some bleachers but a fold up chair might be your best bet if you don't want to stand all day or sit on the floor with the kids.

We have an unusually large team this year, which means that we will actually have someone entered in every event for a change.

On the men's side we have a chance to sweep the distance events if everyone wakes up healthy. And on the women's side Emily B. will presumably pick up where she left off last fall.

A night on the town ...

Last week while most of the runners were in Austria or on the beach, Dom and a couple guys slipped up to Madison for a little work. The madison Invite is a pretty good size meet that attracts a lot of top talent. We weren't officially invited, and I'm not even sure we ever paid the invoice for the entry fee ... but somehow Dom talked the meet organizer into giving us three slots in the late night large school session. Having a reputation for quality distance runners apparently has some perks.

Andrew ran in the fast heat of the mile. He sat in fifth for most of the race, but then with just under a quarter to go he made a decisive move and took the lead going into the bell lap. It looked like he caught some guys napping and he almost stole the whole thing. He finished second with a time of 4:33, which puts him right where he was hoping to be this soon after surgery and a week before conference. My pictures are all blurry because the lights don't play nice with the chip in my camera, but if you squint, they don't look too awful.

Jordan was up next. He had a great first lap and was in perfect position to drop the hammer and show off for the crowd. Unfortunately, he thought about it just a stride too long and missed the window. Experience can be expensive. He finished with a very respectable 55:07 and some motivation for saturday.

Kevin, flew in from an undisclosed but presumably warmer location to toe the line in the 3200. If you want to know how hard it is to sit on an airplane all day and then run a race, ask kevin. I don't know many runners who could pull it off. It was a very fast pace and kevin got caught between packs and had to run most of the race by himself. He finished in 10:50 which is a huge time this early in the season and would have had him kicking for the win last year at this race. The winner this year however went 9:30 and his last quarter might have placed in the open 400. It was a dominate finish.

There was also an actual alumni sighting! Even when we sneak in in the middle of the night they still find us. Amazing!

Kudos to Doug for being so dedicated.

It was close to midnight when they rolled back into Shorewood.

Whitewater reflections

It was a good first meet last night. The competition was a s advertised, and the team looked solid.

The 4X 8 led off for the boys and looked solid. They averaged 2:15 ish from where I was sitting and ran 9 something. I know Dom wanted them under 9, but they looked good going around.

The fast heat of the mile turned out to be a bit of a tactical surprise. Andrew led the first quarter in 70. He held even splits and finished in 5th at 4:42. Kevin ran negative splits which is a great indication that he is on the edge of a great season. He won the race going away in 4:32. The surprise was Agnew from Fort who was favored to win. he tends to go out fast and have a huge kick. I asked him afterwards why he let the first quarter go so slow and he said that he came in worried about kevin and Andrew and so sat on their shoulders at the begining; by the time he realized how slow it was it was too late and Kevin ran away from him.

Kevin seems to have a bit of a reputation building. Dom and I were chatting with a mom from CM after her son won the 800. When we said we were from Shorewood she mentioned that her son has a "kill Kevin" sign on his bedroom door. Apparently they are tired of coming in behind us every year. Watching kevin last night I would have to say that they should just get used to it.

Alex debuted in the 400. He ran a very respectable 58.3 and showed some good speed. That was good enough to place 18 out of 30. It will be interesting to see what he can do when we get outside and the turns become less of a factor.

Malachi and Cameron looked good in the long jump. I wish this picture were in better focus, but my camera just does not focus well under the sodium lights. Unfortunately he got shafted a bit in the 55 meter dash. He won his prelim easily and eased up at the finish, which is normal because you want to save something for the finals. In outdoor they take the winner of each heat plus the next fastest whatever. Unfortunately in indoor they take the 8 fastest regardless of heat. malachi just missed the finals by .03. That's the price of tuition.

Matt looked solid in the fast heat of the 800. He took the early lead and looked comfortable. he let a couple guys go by in the middle and wasn't quite able to reel them all back in before the finish. He ran 2:08 I think. With a little more experience he will win races like this.

Aiden and Joe also ran the 800. They give up a lot of height and stride length but they make up for it in guts. Aiden ran 2:16 and Joe was around 2:26

I left before the 4X4 but they apparently got 9th in 3:46; the girls didn't send any distance runners. Kristin got 5th in the 55m. I have some pictures, but I don't have any names to go with them at the moment. If anyone wants to help me out that would be great.

Race Today

Yes there is a meet today. It is at UW Whitewater.

The meet starts at 4:30 and runs late. There are men's and Women's races that alternate in each event. There are a lot of schools entered so there will be multiple heats of everything.

The 4 X 8 is always the first event and the ladies will go first. There will be two heats, so figure 1/2 an hour. The Boy's will run next. Also 2 heats and we are in the second one so figure the gun will go off maybe at 5:00. Then hurdles. We have runners in the mile at maybe 6:00; the quarter at 7:00 ....

I'm just guessing but my point is that parents who want to make the drive out ( about an hour if the traffic isn't bad) don't neccessarily have to get there at 4 or 4:30 depending on which race you want to see.

There is some very good competition at this meet and the track if I remember correctly is nice. This is nothing like the WFB practice meets we just finished.

Track meets do tend to drag out, and indoor meets more so than most. I think that the official bus is planning to get home after 12:00.

Olympic fever

I know that the Track season officially starts today and everyone is focusing on the "time trials" . However, the olympics are this summer and the trials are currently taking place to pick the US team.

Last November the marathon was held in New York and Ryan Hall owned the field. His 5k splits looked like this :

" 16:44, 15:41, 15:27, 15:12, 15:05, 14:48, 14:28. Yes that's right a 14:28 from 30 to 35k. Hall pumped his fist, pointed to the heavens, and waved to the crowd the final mile savoring the incredible run and still ran a 15 minute 5k pace for the final 7.2k (14.56 from 35 to 40k) "

A new season is about to start, and I am making a few changes here.
The most obvious is the addition of Don Tyler as a principal contributor.
The site takes more time to keep up than I have at the moment, so Don has been kind enough to volunteer to help out. Not sure how this will actually work out, but at the moment we will both be adding content to the front page. Sectional Results

It was a poorly officiated, weather challenged meet that looked like a roller derby for much of the night but they did stay on schedule and all of the races were raced.

Sarah got knocked down three hundred yards into the mile. She landed wrong on her thumb. It looked either dislocated or broken from where I was sitting. To her credit she got up and finished the race before going to the hospital. It was a really gutsy performance. In the boys mile Andrew got knocked down at the start but they let the race go anyway. In the girl's two mile Morgan had to hurdle over a girl who fell in front of her. In the boy's two mile Kevin looked like a pool ball as he got pushed and shoved all over the track. And in the 300 hurdles, Erica went sprawling at the finish. The hurdles were run in the heaviest rain of the night which made it interesting to say the least.

The girl's were unfortunately shut out and will not be sending anyone on to State. There were some great individual efforts up to and including Erica who missed out on qualifying in the 300 hurdles by .06. That's a lean at the tape in case you are wondering.

The boy's had a better night. Maybe they should run all of their meets in the rain.

The 4 X 800 team ( Matt, David, Andrew, Dennis, Jordin, Peter) won with an 8:11. That is the fastest time going into state and they made it look easy. 8:18 turned out to be the cut-off for the fast heat so they couldn't have gone any slower.

Dennis won the open 800. Dennis ran 1:56 and change. With 300 to go he had dropped to 5th and it was looking interesting, but he dug deep and out kicked the field. Including a fresh Mike McCarty who won the 800 at state last year.

Andrew finished fifth in the mile at 4:30.04 and had to wait all night to find out if he was a provisional qualifier or not. There are 16 automatic bids ( 4 from each section) and then one extra provisional if that runner posts a time that is faster than the eighth best of the safe sixteen. Confused? Andrew was the 7th best time overall so he should be in.

Kevin took 3rd in the two mile. He looked awesome. The race surged back and forth around him but he hung in and out kicked a couple guys in the last 200. He ran 9:50 something. He will have a shot to be top five at State. Not bad for a soccer player.

The team finished 8th overall in the meet and will send seven runners to the State meet. I'm sure that three individual qualifiers is also some sort of record for us.

**I know that most of these pictures are blurry, but honestly some of the guys were running way too fast for the lighting conditions and they were not real cooperative about stopping for pictures when they passed the stands. I will of course bring it up with Dom at the next meet. In the mean time it's better than the alternative, I think.

The next party is at State unless there is a banquet before then, but I haven't seen anything about that yet...

Bernard Lagat - Olympic silver medallist, seasonal debut. 3:47 mile PR.
Kevin Sullivan - Canada's best. 3:50 miler has run 3:31. 5th at Olympics.
Nick Willis - New Zealand record holder ran 3:35 last week, 2006 Commonwealth Games gold. His 3:32 1500 equates to a 3:49 mile.
Alan Webb - 3:51 mile at Drake. 3:48 miler.
Craig Mottram - 5k is his main event but he's run 3:48 mile and 2007 outdoor track debut, runnerup in 2007 Millrose mile.
Suleiman Simotwo- Kenyan ran 3:31.6 last year. Already ran 3:31.9 this year for 2nd in Doha.
Shadrack Korir - Ran 3:31 last year. Already ran 3:32 this year for 5th in Doha, Qatar.
Nicholas Kemboi - only 17 years old. Ran 3:33 last year. Also made Kenya's XC team at 12k (we're assuming it's this Nicholas Kemboi and not the Qatari by the same name)
Rob Myers - 3:36 last weekend at adidas. 3:34 pr.
Chris Lukezic - up and coming American. If it wasn't for Webb, he (or Manzano) would be our young hope. 3:37 last week. 3:54 pr.
Ryan McKenzie - Canadian ran 3:38.0 last year.
Steve Slattery - A top American steepler has made 3 world champ teams. Looking for 1st Olympic next year. Ran a 3:56 pr at Reebok meet last year.
Ming Gu - believe it or not, he's the Chinese national record holder in the mile. PR? 3:59. Ran 3:39 last week at adidas.

That is a stacked field ! It could be the greatest mile run this decade in terms of talent in a single event.

Sectionals

Sectionals will be in kewauskum this year. Which is actually a huge improvement over whitewater last year in terms of getting there. Kewauskum is north on 45 just past West Bend. It should take about 45 minutes at normal highway speeds. Starting times for events are pretty standard.

The girls have qualifiers in the long jump, the 4X800, the 2mile, the 4X400, the mile and the 800.

The boys have qualifiers in the 4X800, the mile, the two mile, and the 800.

This is one of the strongest groups we have brought to sectionals in a lot of years.

Don't let the rain discourage you, this will be some really good racing.

State will be in LaCrosse again. There aren't a lot of hotel rooms open in the area but Goose island Campground still has a couple of hundred open sites for $20 a night if you feel adventurous. LaCrosse is also only 3 and a half hours away so you can drive it round trip in a day without too much effort.

Regional meet

The first qualifying round for the state meet will be at Grafton High School Today.
The running events will start at 4:00 with the 3200 meter relay for which we will be fielding a competitive entry so don't slide in too late. The top four finishers in each event will move on to the sectional meet Thursday in Kewauskum.

Grafton HS is a bout 1 mile west of I-43 on HWY 60 ( ext. 92). It takes about 30 minutes to get there from the high school.

There was some nifty running the last couple of days that should get at least a mention if not a few pictures.

At the VCM Dennis ran a 1:56 800 against a decent field. he is on track to take a shot at winning D2 State in the open 800. If he does he will be the first individual boys state champion in the history of SHS or at last going back awhile. Someone please correct me if that is too far out.

Kevin returned from "boot" camp and took second in the two mile. He might have won the event if he hadn't been knocked off the track on the final turn. Apparently the officials didn't see it so it goes in the experience column.

Andrew got caught in the middle of a shoot-out in the mile. A very stacked field strolled through the first quarter in 74. No offense but the JV girls race went out faster than that. Andrew hung on for third in a wild sprint to the line.

Speaking of the JV girl's race... Heidi finally broke 7 minutes in the mile to wild applause from friends and family. Actually she smashed it by going 6:50.

She was immediately overshadowed by Peter who led the boy's mile almost from tape to tape. he went out in 64 and finished in 4:48. He got pushed a little in the last 100m but would not be denied. Possibly the best race of the season. Peter will get a chance to repeat the magic at regionals on Monday and will definitely be featured in Cross Country next fall. wow.

And for those of you counting at home ... the boys team officially has seven runners under 5 minutes in the mile this year. That's pretty unusual.

And finally, a giant rasberry goes out to the bus company that forgot to pick the team up after the meet last night. Fortunately the runners were able to hitch a ride with the cudahy team, but that's not actually on the way and made for a late night. Unbelievable.

Regionals on Monday will be at Grafton High School. Very nice track. Dennis, Andrew, and kevin should easily move on and several others are possible.

The real test comes Thursday at sectionals. We have probably the toughest sectional in the state and everyone will have to be peaking to move on.

Today's meet was canceled due to the rain.
Unfortunately it wasn't called off until after everyone got there.
It was rescheduled for tomorrow at the same time and place.

The rain wasn't unexpected and someone should have made this call a lot earlier, in my opinion. The kids are missing a lot of school for no purpose. Even Andrew was concerned about how many classes he has been out, and if it is bothering him ...

The Arrowhead meet is Friday night.

This is a huge meet.

Almost a State like meet in terms of competition.

It is also a night meet and it can get downright cold by the end so if you are coming bring layers.

The running events start right at 5:00 and the meet runs pretty much on time... so if you want to see a particular race you need to factor in rush hour traffic and plan to be there just before 5.

The kids will be laving at 2:00.

Relay results from Newman

The boys track team ran into some great competition and nice weather at the Conference Relays on Tuesday May 1st. For the first time of the season the weather was conducive to nice performances.

The boys team was propelled by the distance medely relay which the runners ran several season best times. Taking home the gold and a new Conference record was the team of Matt Hillard, Jordan Washington, Andrew Erickson and Dennis Walsh. The guys posted a season best time of 10:37. We finally were able to put the relay together but we still have some work to do on the handoffs and basic race stategies.

The Dan Benson Invite will be held at Wauwatosa West High School. The meet will start at 10:30 for the field events and 11:30 for the running events. The bus will leave the HS at 9:00am. Perhaps earlier. I will check with Mr. Haury. I have had to make many changes do to a a school function, injuries and sicknesses. If there needs to be any more changes please let me know before 1:00pm tomorrow. After that I can not make any more changes.

Pasta Dinner will be held at Dennis's tomorrow. Please try to make. You do not have to compete to be able to come to the Dinner!!

The New Berlin relays

It was cold and windy and it rained a little. That's perfect cross country weather but less than optimal for track and the times showed that.

The guys were disqualified in their first three or four events which was a little discouraging, but hey, they paint lines on the track for a reason.

I don't have official times yet so I will save those for a different post.

The schedule on this site was sent to me a couple months ago by Dom. Apparently a few things have changed since then, including today's race in New Berlin. I'll fact check the rest of the season when i get a chance. In the meantime... the relevant part of Dom's last e-mail reads:

Viking Relays

The bus will leave at 2:00 pm. Make sure that you have all of your equipment and prepare for a change of weather. There as been many changes in the meet line up do to injuries and sicknesses. Please be prepared to compete in any event!!

Field events will start at 4:00 p.m. and the running events begin at 4:30.

¼” spikes will be allowed. Shot and discus circles are cement.

Events will be scored through top 7 places. Medals given to the top 3 in each event

Concessions will be selling food and drink.

London Results

The London marathon came down to another kick finish yesterday for the second year in a row. There is plenty of video and commentary at Letsrun and Flocasts if you are interested.

the cool part was that Ryan Hall in his first Marathon ever ran 2:08 something and finished in the top ten. He has a shot to win a medal for the US in the next Olympics. He is also a really cool interview.

I uploaded some pictures to the photo show site if anyone is interested. I am still waiting for results from the coaches.

I do remember a few items.

Dennis ran 4:29 basically by himself in the mile which wputs him way ahead of where he was at this time last year.

Laura ran a very gutsy 800 meter, I didn't get the time but she earned second place the hard way.

Becca took the mile in a tactical battle with a runner from Bay.

Andrew finished the two mile in 10:05. Slower than he wanted but he looked good doing it.

The highlight of the meet though was the mile relay. The four guys who ran the two mile turned around and ran the relay with no rest. They got beat by a very good girl's team but it was close. Andrew finished with a 61 to make her earn it.

Bill should have official numbers soon.

Race Tomorrow : SHS invite

There will be a small home meet tomorrow starting at 4:00. This is a nice friendly get together with a few local schools. The dangerous condition of our track doesn't allow us to host anything more elaborate. The weather should be great so plan to bring a blanket and cheer for the runners.

I know that the ladies have a spaghetti dinner tonight because it is at our house ( 1817 E Newton). I don't know if the guys have a sponsor lined up or not.

London Marathon

The London Marathon is this sunday.

The guys at LetsRun describe the field this way:

Want to run faster?

Read a book... no seriously. Running is a huge international sport with a ton of history and really amazing characters that no one ever talks about. Most of these guys and gals are more than happy to share their "secrets" and struggles. The problem is that you have to work a bit to find them.

Which is why I have collected a few classics in the Amazon ads on the left.

In particular let me highly recommend "fast Tracks". It is out of print but you can get a decent library cast-off for less than $4. That's a steal. The book traces the history of the sport from ancient Greece up to the late 70's. There are hundreds of great stories in there that will make you want to get out and run and run faster.

Some of these guys are still alive believe it or not. Steve Scott was featured on Flocasts this morning. Do you know who Steve Scott is? He currently holds the American record in the Mile ( 3:47.69). The Flocast dudes ask him to name his favorite race and he talks about a race where he went out too slow (65) and got out kicked. Go figure. He also talks about the race he set the American record in. He describes the exact point at the beginning of the fourth lap where he hesitated too long before taking the lead and it cost him the world record ( he missed it by .33). If you are a miler you should be watching the video of that race...

Scott's mile record was set in 1982. He also still holds the American record in the indoor mile; the 2000m; and the 1500.

However I think that his most impressive stat is that he broke 4 minutes in the mile 136 times.

Conference pictures

I don't really do indoor pictures because the lighting makes it almost impossible for the auto focus on my little camera to take anything but fuzzy impressions. However since several people asked... In the men's 1600 Andrew was in or at the lead for 1200 and then faded. David passed him in the last 200 and posted 4:36 a PR if I am not mistaken.

Dennis broke 2 in the 800 and seemed happy with the effort.

The boy's 1600m relay took second but it was a photo finish. They ran about as well as I have ever seen them. It was almost worth the wait.

In the girl's 1600m Becca ran 5:53 and was 9th I think. Morgan ran 6:04 and looked comfortable.

In the 55m dash Kristin was 6th with 7.94

The 4X200 team was 2nd with 1:58

The ladies 1600m relay ran 4:27

There were a lot of other good performances but I didn't get a watch on them.

Conference is today for varsity runners

Yes the Woodland conference meet is today during the day. Apparently most of the other schools are on spring break so they voted to start early in the day to avoid a midnight finish. Apparently none of the coaches are Brewers fans either. So without further ado the details for today are as follows:

SPECTATORS Admission for spectators is $3 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens. BLEACHER AREAS in the field house are for SPECTATORS ONLY and not for athletes or coaches.

PARKING Buses may drop athletes and coaches on the East end of the Tarble Athletics and Recreation Center (TARC). Team buses can then park where room is available.

CONCESSIONS A concession stand will be available on the second floor. The stand is located in the lobby area.

T-SHIRTS Woodland Conference Indoor Track Meet T-shirts will be on sale for $10 the day of the meet. Long sleeve shirts will also be available for $15.

DIRECTIONS From southbound I-94: Exit at Highway E, the first Kenosha exit. Follow east for approximately eight miles, or until the road ends at Sheridan Road (Wisconsin Highway 32) and turn right (south). Carthage College is on this road, approximately one mile south of Highway E. Turn left at the driveway past the flagpole and over the bridge to reach the Carthage Physical Education Center.

The half

Andrew was in second place after the quarter which was a tame 59 sec. The pack slowed down in the third lap and Andrew took the lead. He held it right up to the last 4 feet... when he got passed by a pack. I think he got fourth. They all finished in 2:02. That was the closest half I have seen in forever.

Christian just finished the 2 mile. I missed his official time but he was just under 11:00 in second place. He looked like he was running easy.

next up is the mile relay... we will see if any one has any gas left in the tank.

Don't forget, conference in on Monday at carthage college.

the quarter

Dennis dueled Denure in the fast heat of the quarter. Denure slipped by with 100m to go and held on to win. Dennis crossed in second place with a time of 53 seconds. That's smoking this early in the season.

The Mile

Christian was scheduled to run the mile but he traded with Ben at the last minute. I have no idea what was involved in the trade.

Ben went out strong and crossed the half in 2:31. He lost contact in the second half and finished in 5:05. If he had had someone to run with I think he could have broken 5 but it was a gutsy effort none the less.

More races as they happen.

Live from Madison

This is new and different. The college has free internet access set up all over so I thought I would post the early numbers.

The 4 X 8 just finished. Monroe won easily in 7:56. Apparently they are still upset about cross country.

Andrew led off. He got boxed on the first lap but retook the lead in lap two His split was 2:03 something.
He handed off to Dennis in second place. Dennis looked great but couldn't make up the gap. He also ran 2:03. Dennis gave the stick to David. David looked a little flat. He ran a 2:07 but maintained our overall position. ( Denure ran a 1:56 split just in front of him for Monroe). Jordan was running anchor and looked good for the first 200. However his allergies kicked in and he had to finish the rest of the race sans oxygen. His split was 2:17 ish. The total time was 8:29 and the team finished 5th. Not what we were looking for but it is still early in the season.

There is a break in the action at the moment. I will post on the open 800 and the mile relay as they happen.

Men's race on Saturday

Dom will be taking the distance crew to the madison West Relays on Saturday. This is a huge meet with a lot of great competition. We haven't been here before so it should be interesting.

The meet will be at the Shell, I am assuming that this is the college facility next to the football stadium and that there isn't some other facility with the same name...

The guys will leave from the high school at 8:00 sharp and get to madison around 9:30.
The field events start around 10:00 and the first running event is scheduled for 11:00.

The first running event will be the 3200m relay and we do have a team in the pool so you don't want to be late. The meet should finish around 3:00 or so.

Spectators will probably be asked to pay $3-$5 dollars at the door so be prepared. Also parking in madison can be a bit iffy so pack a roll of quarters for the meters.

Should be a good event.

House keeping

I apologize for ignoring this site for the last week. I have been busy with other stuff.

If anyone has pictures or times from the last couple meets I would be happy to post them.

Also, someone commented that with two daughters on the girl's team I should have more info on the ladies. And to a certain extent that is true... and if all you want is the inside scoop on how my daughters ran I can do that. ( Emily ran a 7:00 mile last night. That's a 21 second PR). However the reality of teenagers is that they rarely know much of what is happening around them unless it is happening to them and their ability to communicate that to their parents is limited at best. I certainly don't rely on Andrew for the boy's news.

Dom has been really good about sending me regular e-mails with information. This is helpful because all I have to do is cut and paste and the stuff can be up in a matter of minutes. Ditto for the spaghetti dinners and banquets. Dom is unusual though in that he seems to be on his computer all of the time and he is very good about communicating by e-mail.

Sarah and Bill are not as attached to the Internet. That is not a criticism in any way. Sarah in particular is much more organized than Dom about creating elaborate handouts with relevant information for the girls. The difference is that I can't cut and paste the handouts easily even if I do get them.

Is there a point to this?

Yeah, this is a long way of explaining why this has become more of a site for the guys than the girls despite my intentions to make it work for both.

One possible solution is obviously to expand the number of people writing posts beyond myself. I am certainly happy to do so. If anybody out there would like to contribute on a regular basis please let me know in the comments and I will contact you.

I am getting my info from Dom so if it tilts towards the Men it is only because of my source not any kind of bias.

The day is split between the ladies and the men. As courtesy dictates the ladies will go first.

The ladies field events will start at 8:30 a.m.
The running events will start 20 minutes after the finish of the field events at around 10:30 a.m.

The Men will start their field events at 4:30 p.m.
And the running events should start around 6:30 p.m.

Those who are not competing please come in your shorewood clothing and WATCH. You can learn a lot about your event by being there!! Plus your teammates run-throw-jump better with fan support!!

WARNING!!!! You me be asked at any moment to run in a relay!! Just say YES coach and I will do my BEST!!!! There are many reason why you may be asked, do not question it! ( Dom doesn't say but I assume that this includes parents as well so wear appropriate shoes).

This is a great meet on a premiere track. Please come and show your support.

The magic of the net

Jim Ryun was the first high school runner to break 4 minutes in the mile. After a turbulent running career, he became a US congressman from kansas, and on a junket to Argentina in 2002 he signed the pair of spikes that Heidi has been running in.

Would you like to go back to 1965 and watch him run a sub 4 mile? would it be even cooler if he out kicks Peter Snell to do it? (Snell, of course was the olympic champion in both the 800 and the 1500 at the 1964 olympics in Rome. A double that has yet to be repeated).

Must see videos

I will probably be saying this all year, but if you are not checking out the daily videos at Flocasts you are really making a huge mistake.

As a general rule it is very hard to find good coverage of track and field as a sport. Even harder to find is good source material from the best minds in the sport about why they do what they do and why it works. Impossible to find is advice and reflections from the current top athletes themselves. Heck it's hard to know who the top athletes are.

Flocasts is an amazing new resource. These guys are driving around the country in a beat up car with a video camera taping interviews with the best coaches and runners in the country. This has never been done before..... And they are doing a really great job with it. Their stated goal is to put up a new video every day for the whole year.

Who is in these videos? Well, Claire was in one that featured the Ladies team at Colorado last month.

There was one in particular recently ( March 1) that everyone on the team should watch. It features the coach from Texas, Vigilante ( how cool is that for a coach's last name), talking about his freshman superstar leo Manzano. the piece is titled "the freshman 15" . You may have to go to "more videos" and look for it because it has been buried by a slew of new interviews.

The part that really struck me was the coach talking at the beginning about talent. He says that there are a lot of different kinds of talent. Working hard is a talent; wanting to win is a talent; perseverance is a talent; etc... it is a good reminder why the most physically gifted runner isn't always first.

And, oh yeah, the finish of the race is awesome... Leo has some serious wheels.

Free Food

The first pasta dinner of the season for the boy's team will be at the Larsen's house, this Friday the 16th.

They are located at 4541 N Marlborough Dr (one house from the corner of Glendale and Marlborough). They will put a danish flag in the front yard.

The food will be ready at 6:00.

If you have never hosted one of these you should consider doing so, it is a great way to meet the team, and the kids are very appreciative.

I'm sure that the girl's will have one also, I will post the details when I get an e-mail.

First race is this weekend !

This saturday is the Shorewood Invite at UWM. This is a great event but a really long day.
Because of the nature of indoor track meets and the number of teams participating ... each team is limited to two runners per event. this means that only the older more seasoned runners will run here. I don't have times yet but the meet tends to run all day and then some. Volunteers are deffinitely essential so call Bill or Dom if you can help out for some or all of the meet.

I will post more details when Dom releases them.

Meeting Tonight

Great new site

I just discovered this site : Flocasts I am sure that it has been around for awhile.

They have a huge collection of interviews with some of the best current and past runners and coaches in our sport. Guys like Shorter, Jennings, Tegenkamp, Wetmore, and others. It is well worth your time.

In particular they have a video up of Ryan Hall running the Aramco half marathon last week.
Ryan set a new American record of 59:43.

How fast is that?

That's 13 4:30 miles back to back.

That's a 5K split of 14:05... a 10K split of 28:20...

It was a huge run and he made it look easy. Watch for this guy in the '08 Olympics.

UWM results

There wasn't a huge crowd last night, mostly college runners from MSOE and UWM.
The men's 3000 went in a leisurly 9:17 and the mile was won in 4:31.

Andrew took second in the mile with 4:40. A decent first race.

There is another race next tuesday. It would be nice to see some more people out. This is a great chance to get some experience and see where you are at without the pressure of a normal meet.

Indoor meets

For those of you who just can't wait...

UWM sponsors a series of developmental meets. Competition can be hit or miss but is generally pretty good.

The meets are on tuesday nights at 6:30 and it costs $10 at the door if you want to run.

The last two Dates are :
