Equipment corner II

Do socks matter?

That depends on how you like your blisters. Andrew seems to enjoy peeling off inch long hunks of dead skin to wave at his sisters but maybe that's just a guy thing.

Blisters are caused by two things: friction and moisture. If you want to eliminate friction you basically have to wear two socks. The downside to that is obviously the bulk and the weight. If you want to eliminate moisture you have to pay up for materials like Coolmax.

There is a company called Injinji that caters to ultra distance runners ( think 100 plus miles across the sahara) that has one of the best socks for preventing blisters. Oddly enough it is a toe sock that also seperates each toe like a glove. I have never actually worn them but I know people who swear by them. It's also interesting to see that a number of the featured testimonials on their site are from soldiers in Iraq.

The site is here.
