Next meet : 'Tosa

The next meet on the schedule is in 'Tosa. I believe it is the Dan Benson meet. The school is hard to find if you are not familiar with the area. The mapquest directions are here.
This meet will feature primarily the JV runners. Because of space limitations and because the meets already go so long most invitationals limit schools to three entries per event. Since we have roughly 20 distance runners on the boys' team and essentially four distance events Dom has to make some tough decisions every week to ensure that everyone gets to run in the events that they want to. We have a lot of great new freshman on the team and this will be their meet to show off.
I'll post the order of events and times when Dom sends them to me.
The meet officially starts at 10:30 a.m.

The politics of Track
While Track and Cross Country are "pure" sports in that they generally reward the people who work the hardest and show up the slackers, the sport has a long and wierd history of being governed by coaches and officials who have never run a step in their lives. The stories are legion concerning top runners who are disqualified after a race for minor rule book infractions ( I'm thinking of the girl who started out wearing a headband which is legal but was disqualified because the headband slipped down around her neck where it was ruled a necklace which is not allowed). There are whole books written on the subject so I'll get to my point.
CONTINUED
ESPN has an article about a Track coach who was fired for submitting inflated times on an entry form for a big meet. While this sounds like a major infraction... and I am not advocating the practice... It is equivalent to the way heights are listed for basketball players, and weight is listed for football players. They are always wrong but they are tolerated if you could make a plausible case for them being close. For example you can list a 6'0" basketball player as 6'2" or 6'3" but you couldn't list him as 6'8". Similarily you could list a 5:10 miler as having run 5:00 but not 4:50. Coaches assume a certain amount of shading but they won't tolerate outright lies. In the ESPN article it sounds like the AD was looking for a way to get rid of the coach for personal reasons, otherwise there is no way that an AD would investigate his own coach for somethig like this. The fact that the football coach took over just seals the deal.
Was there a point to this rant? Sort of. There are two types of people in our sport. Those who have run and understand just how hard the atheletes work, and those who have never run but enjoy using the rule book to mess with people. It makes for some very interesting situations.
You can read the article here.

Do socks matter?
That depends on how you like your blisters. Andrew seems to enjoy peeling off inch long hunks of dead skin to wave at his sisters but maybe that's just a guy thing.
Blisters are caused by two things: friction and moisture. If you want to eliminate friction you basically have to wear two socks. The downside to that is obviously the bulk and the weight. If you want to eliminate moisture you have to pay up for materials like Coolmax.
There is a company called Injinji that caters to ultra distance runners ( think 100 plus miles across the sahara) that has one of the best socks for preventing blisters. Oddly enough it is a toe sock that also seperates each toe like a glove. I have never actually worn them but I know people who swear by them. It's also interesting to see that a number of the featured testimonials on their site are from soldiers in Iraq.
The site is here.

A short recap
I missed the meet last night due to the schedule change and I haven't recieved any numbers from Dom or Sarah yet. However, I do know that the boy's 6400m relay team set a new meet record by just over 30 seconds. Andrew and Dennis ran book end 4:33's and David and Jake posted in the mid 4:40's. That's a decent workout. David also ran a 52 second quarter in the 1600 relay.

Buy a Book or two
The history of running includes some of the most interesting and color full characters you will ever encounter. Unless you are a "runner" you may never have heard of any of these athletes. That's a shame. Over on the left sidebar I have collected a selection of some of the better running books that are still in print. If you want to understand the sport you really should read a few of these books. Start with "run with the champions" and/or "Za-to-pek" and then keep going. If they don't inspire you to go run then you may not have a pulse.

The London Marathon
I know that the American Media is ignoring it, but there are some great marathons being run and the Americans are finally starting to count at the end again. This last weekend the London marathon attracted one of the best collection of top runners in a long long time. On the women's side American Deena Kastor became the eighth women to break 2:20 winning easily in 2:19 and change. On the men's side the pack went out well under world record pace and then collectively hit the wall. After averaging 4:45 they tossed in a few 5 plus splits. At the end a pair of Kenyans kicked for the win after a 4:33 mile. The whole story is on the IAAF site here.
Wow.

A West Bend Recap

The weather turned out to be perfect, unfortunately there was almost no one there to notice. Shorewood brought a total of seven girls to the meet. The meet started at 10:00 a.m. I got there at about 10:45 and they were already lining up the 330 low hurdles. That's a quick meet. I don't have any numbers except for Heidi's half which was a PR. I do have a few pictures which I will post here since there are only a few.

Lean Forward !

Andrew took a break from lounging on the couch yesterday to help his sister work on her form. It reminded me of the time I paid him to teach her how to ride a bike. In particular, the image where he is pushing her down the straight-away in an effort to get her to lean forward. It didn't cost me anything this time but the pictures are priceless. Running correctly is a lot harder than it looks, and running next to someone with good form is the easiest way to learn.

A West Bend Weekend
The Girl's team has a quad meet out in West Bend this Saturday. I will post the details when I get them.
UPDATE: The meet is being hosted by the East half of the High school in West Bend but since they share the same track ( and building) as the westies, that's not particularly germane. Those of you who attended the first cross country race of the season last fall will remember the track.
The meet officially starts at 10:00. The bus will leave from Shorewood at 8:00.
This will be a very small meet and it will probably go very fast. It is a quad meet. It's only for the girls. Most of our team are still gone on spring break ( we will have 6 runners). And there is a good chance that it will rain. All of those factors should make for a short but fun outing.
The mapquest directions can be found here..
It takes about 45 minutes to get there.
See you there!

Welcome to the team
For the new parents:
Track meets are usually an all day affair and from now on they are outdoors.
You should plan to bring things like a cushion/blanket to sit on; a wind jacket; an umbrella; snacks; a water bottle; sunglasses and a stop watch. These are kind of the basics. Spring weather can range up or down 20 degrees more than once during a meet and sitting in the bleachers if it is windy can be colder than standing at a cross country meet.
If you take pictures, please e-mail me copies, or send me a disk so I can put them up on the site. If you look at the links on the left you can see the slide show tab that I use to organize the pictures that I do get. You can send along your own music as well if you don't like mine. Also, any of these pictures can be downloaded and printed. You can send them straight to wallmart or wallgreens or where ever you like.

Timing
I know that everyone knows this but I will mention it for those who do not.
Light travels faster than sound. Radical but true. So what? So, when you are timing a race you need to start your watch when you see the smoke not when you hear the gun. There is actually a significant difference.

SPLITS
There isn't a lot of jargon in track but there is some. As I get time I will try to post some definitions for parents who are new to the sport. I know that the kids will roll their eyes at my descriptions but it's not for them.
Split times are very important to the runners, especially right after their event. Why is right away important? Because splits are as close as you can get to instant replay and analysis in running. They answer the question " how did you do?" The coaches do record these but they are not always available right away. It helps if you as a parent are also timing the event and writing down splits.
Armed with your data, after the race you can run up to your daughter and say " That was great, you went out in (whatever) for the first 200 and then held even until the last kick at the finish." To which your daughter will say " Really? I felt like I totally slowed down on the third lap" and you can say " Well, your first half of that lap was maybe 2 seconds slower but overall the lap was right on pace" etc..." See how much smarter and well informed you look by having the splits? And you don't just look smarter, you are smarter. If you don't have a watch that can record multiple split times go buy one. They are about 10 dollars at Stuff-mart.

"Splits" count as any whole lap or meaningful fraction of a lap. I.E. in the mile you would want to note each lap time but it is also valuable to note each half lap or 200m. The coaches will have the lap time but not the 200m. You can scale up or down depending on the event. ( even in the 100m dash, good runners will want to know their first 50).

The equipment corner
This is going to be a new feature unless I get a lot of complaints. While running doesn't require a lot of gear and or special equipment there are some things that do make a difference. Every week or so I plan to feature something that might not be obvious but that serious runners use.
I'm starting off with this link for Nipguards.
This is for the boys only. I know that this sounds goofy but if you are ever on a long run and the silk screening on your shirt rubs the skin off of this sensitive area it is no laughing matter. It is also way more common than you might think. This company sells almost 1 million dollars worth of these things a year, so there is a significant market out there ( and not just for fat people). I believe that Rodiez's shoe store in 'Tosa carries them.
Next Week: Toe socks, can they prevent blisters?

TEAM AWARDS
There are four team awards per season given at the awards banquet.
CAPTAINS ROLES
CAPTAINS WILL BE CHOSEN DURING THE FIRST PART OF THE SEASON AND THEY NEED TO BE ABLE TO FULFILL THE FOLLOWING DUTIES:
SETTING RECORDS
Personal Records
The letters P.R. to an athlete stand for PERSONAL RECORD. A personal record is your best individual performance ever during meet competition only. PR's also serve as goals, something to lock on to and focus all your energies towards. Goals are meant to be achieved. When you reach a goal, set a new one.
Another interesting thing about PR's is that they are everlasting. Former track athletes remember their very best performance. They could probably also tell you when they did it, where they did it, the weather conditions, and who they competed against. If you don't believe this, ask a former track athlete. By knowing your PR and comparing it to others in your event, you can better prepare for the competitions.
PR's are an integral part of track & field. They give you something to
improve on and when you get a new PR you are a winner and it doesn't matter how you finished because you've improved and you are ready to go back to work on another PR.
Season's Best
SB stands for seasons best. As you have established a personal record (PR) from previous years, it becomes important to keep track of your improvement during a given season. A PR usually follows a full season of training and is difficult to break early on in the next season. A lot of hard work in the off-season could enable you to PR early. A season's best gives you that intermediate step before achieving a new PR.
School Records
Records will be kept for sophomores, juniors and seniors. In order to break a record the performance must be during an official track meet. Those athletes breaking a record in an event during the season will receive special recognition.
What is a Workout?
A workout is 25% perspiration and 75% determination. Stated another way, it is one part physical exertion and three parts self-discipline. Doing it is easy once you get started.
A workout makes you better today than you were yesterday. It strengthens the body, relaxes the mind and toughens the spirit. When you work out regularly, your problems diminish and your confidence grows.
A workout is a personal triumph over laziness and procrastination. It is a badge of a winner - the mark of an organized, goal-oriented person who has taken charge of his or her destiny.
A workout is a wise use of time and an investment in excellence. It is a way of preparing for life's challenges and proving to yourself that you have what it takes to do what is necessary. A workout is a key that helps unlock the door to opportunity and success. Hidden within each of us is an extraordinary force.
Physical and mental fitness are the triggers that can release it.
A workout is a form of rebirth. When you finish a good workout, you don't simply feel better - you feel better about yourself!!!!!

- Tobacco as per policy outlined in the Shorewood Athletic Code*
- Alcohol/Drugs As per policy outlined in the Shorewood Athletic Code*
- The Shorewood High School Track coaching staff considers the signing of the athletic contract a binding agreement that the athlete will not participate in these activities. Many of the events in track have an element of potential for injury and we feel we must strictly enforce the maximum penalty for the safety of all individuals in the program. We also feel conditioning and training play such a major role in performance in our sport that we must enforce the maximum allowable penalty for breaking the contract.

Bassen breaks five !
It was a little windy last night, but at least it didn't rain. There were a lot of decent times posted. In the mile Jake looked comfortable coming home in 4:46 (?) but the real story was several places further back. John broke through the elusive five minute barrier and ran 4:54. Ask any miler and they will be able to give you all the details from their first sub 5 race, it is a huge psychological milestone. Jordan, one of the new up and coming freshmen, ran 5:15 in his first mile ever. Not bad for a soccer player.
Brian looked great for the first 2/3 of his quarter.
Andrew and Dennis pushed each other in the 800 and the 3200 with Dennis taking both tapes.
And the mile relay featured a blended team, half Bay and half Shorewood, a combo that will probably never be seen again.
I'll be happy to write about the girl's if Sarah or someone can e-mail me some numbers.

Woodland results
Since we are going to the Woodland conference next year, I glanced at their results for the conference tournament. The name that jumped out on the boys side was Nick Limoni. He was first in the half ( 2:02); second in the mile ( 4:31); and second in the two mile ( 9:51). That's a heck of a triple!

A rare home meet
There is a meet scheduled for tonight on our track starting right after school. It is a quad meet featuring teams from Messmer, Riverside, Whitefish bay, and Shorewood. It will be a casual affair run by the athletes. The featured event will most likely be the 800 for the boys.
If you are wondering why we don't host more home events then you haven't been on our track lately. The surface is pitted and peeling away in spots; Enough that it is really not safe for a real invitational. The surface was further damaged a few years ago when a maintenance person ran an aerator over the track and removed a series of plugs.
Are there plans to fix this? Yes. Two years ago a former student donated $500,000.00 to replace the wooden grandstand and replace the track. Nothing has been done yet because "the powers that be" decided that what we really need is a 3 million dollar overhaul to include a new artificial turf soccer field, locker rooms, concession stands, a dome for the field, etc... Since no one has come forward to donate the next 2.5 million dollars everything is on hold.
So, enjoy the meet tonight, it may be the last ever held on this particular track.

Meet the President
The Wisconsin Badgers Cross Country team was invited to the White House last week. The story is here.
Notice how running is an assumed part of their normal schedule even when they travel.
I'm sure that our invite is coming. It probably got lost in the mail.

First Blush

The final Indoor Parkland Conference race was held over the week end. The memorial T-shirts were very cool but sold out early ( as did the subs). There were some official numbers in the Sunday paper but the Journal doesn't seem to have felt the need to post them online yet so we will have to wait for actual hard numbers from Dom and Sarah.
On the boys' side the meet started with a spirited 4x800 that featured our up and coming freshman class. Despite a solid kick from Jordan they came up just short. These guys will be good once they get a season or two of Cross Country behind them.
The ladies 4x8 smoked the competition and essentially ran their own race. While not a record it was a dominant statement.

The mile had everyone reaching for their copy of the rule book. However despite the muttering and furrowed brows no actual complaints were filed. On the ladies side Colleen lapped a slower runner by passing her on the inside. A legal move if there is room. It looked fine to me, but a disgruntled Slinger coach was still talking about it at 4:00 when I walked past her. Colleen by the way ran a great race.
The boy's mile filled up late. Dennis and John came straight from taking the ACT test and arrived just before the gun. John in particular ran in just as the commands were being given and set a conference record for changing out of his street clothes. Andrew won the race easily around 4:36. He missed the conference record by less than 2 seconds. Dennis was third at 4:50 (?) and John ran 5:00 even.

Jake won the two mile and made it look easy ( 10:08 ?). He had more than four laps on some of the runners by the finish. David was second and Christian took off a lap in the middle but finished strong.
The boys' mile relay finished the day with a win. The relay featured the distance crew rather than the sprinters and they put up a very good time.
Pictures and real numbers will go up when I get them.

Congratulations everybody!

Conference is this Saturday.
Yes the last race of the indoor season is upon us. The boys have had a three week break from competition and should be ready to bust out. This will be the last indoor race for the doomed parkland conference so any records set on Saturday will stand forever.
Shorewood is the official host school and the events will once again be at UWM. Bill has been lining up volunteers and has probably asked everybody already, however if you have not been approached, feel free to call Bill and offer to help out.
The fun starts early and goes all day. If you haven't been to a lot of meets and you are trying to figure out when an event might be run the rule of thumb is that each race takes about 15 minutes. The longer races ( half, mile, two mile) will likely each have 2 or three heats. The sprints sound faster and shorter but they have preliminaries and finals ( also, they have fewer runners per race). For these reasons each sprint can take well over an hour to complete.
Field events are always run first because they overlap the track. The first running event is usually the 4x 800 relay and the last event is always the mile relay.
If you haven't been before, this is a great venue and the athletes really appreciate the support.
See you there.

Hard work pays off
Running is one of the rare sports where a total lack of "natural" talent can be overcome by hard work and courage. Runners World has an interview with Brian Sell here . He has been averaging 140 miles a week in preparation for the Boston Marathon and just had a peak week of 162 miles. He is hoping to run 2:12 ( that's a 5 flat pace). Notice at the end he mentions that his best two mile in high school was 10:06. That means that he is where he is because of guts and hard work. It takes time, but anyone can be a good runner if they are crazy enough.

Madison Relays
There was a race in Madison Saturday (1st), we weren't there but several teams that we will see at state were. In the 4x800 WFB turned in a very impressive 8:05, followed by Monroe in 8:21. Monroe did have two stand out individuals. Tom Wellls took the 3200 in 9:55 and Pat Klein won the 800 in 1:59. The 1600 went in 4:35. These are some fast times for this point in the season.
